What is Live Blood Morphology?

Live blood morphology (also known as live blood analysis or dark field microscopy) is a complementary health assessment technique that involves examining a single, fresh drop of blood under a high-powered microscope in real time. Unlike conventional pathology tests, the blood is not processed, stained or preserved — it is placed directly on a slide and viewed while the cells are still alive and active.

This approach allows the practitioner to observe the size, shape, movement and condition of blood cells, as well as the quality of the surrounding plasma. The resulting image is displayed on a screen so that you can see your own blood picture alongside your practitioner and have your findings explained in plain language as they are observed.

At Integrated Natural Medicine, we use both American and German live blood analysis systems, giving us the benefit of complementary methodologies for a more complete assessment. Live blood morphology is a complementary assessment tool — it does not replace conventional pathology testing or medical diagnosis.

What Can Live Blood Morphology Reveal?

Live blood morphology provides a real-time picture of the blood environment — often referred to as the "terrain" — including cell health, plasma quality and the presence of various particles. A practitioner trained in live blood analysis may observe:

  • Red blood cell size & shape
  • Red blood cell aggregation
  • White blood cell activity
  • Platelet function & appearance
  • Plasma quality & clarity
  • Signs of oxidative stress
  • Fibrin activity
  • Microbial forms & particles
  • Overall blood terrain
  • Cell membrane integrity
  • Nutritional indicators
  • Acid-alkaline balance indicators

Live blood morphology is a complementary assessment approach and the findings are used to inform supportive wellness recommendations — not to diagnose medical conditions. Always consult your GP for medical concerns and diagnosis.

American and German Systems

Our clinic utilises both the American (Nordenstrom) and German (Enderlein/Pleomorphic) approaches to live blood analysis. These two schools offer complementary frameworks for interpreting what is seen in the blood picture, allowing for a richer and more nuanced assessment.

The American system focuses primarily on red blood cell morphology and the structural characteristics of blood components. The German system incorporates the pleomorphic model, which considers the role of microbial forms and their relationship to the blood terrain and constitution. Together, these systems give our practitioners a broad lens through which to assess your individual blood picture.

Dark Field vs Phase Contrast Microscopy

Dark field microscopy illuminates specimens from the side against a dark background, making living blood cells appear bright and luminous. This method is ideal for observing living, unstained cells and any particles in the plasma that would otherwise be difficult to see.

Phase contrast microscopy uses differences in light phase to create contrast in transparent specimens. It is particularly useful for observing cellular detail, membrane integrity and subtle changes in cell morphology without staining the sample.

Both techniques are available at our Noosa clinic, and the choice of method is guided by your practitioner based on your assessment needs.

Coagulated Blood Morphology

As a complementary add-on to live blood analysis, coagulated blood morphology examines a dried blood sample (also called the Bradford test or oxidative stress test). A drop of blood is allowed to coagulate on a slide and is then examined under the microscope to assess clotting patterns, oxidative burden and overall blood terrain indicators.

Different coagulation patterns have been associated with various wellness states and constitutional tendencies by researchers working in this field. This assessment is used alongside the live blood picture to provide a more complete overview of your blood health environment.

What to Expect During Your Session

Your session begins with a brief health history discussion. The practitioner will then take a small drop of blood via a gentle finger-prick — a quick and minimally uncomfortable process similar to a standard blood glucose test. The blood is immediately placed on a microscope slide and the live image is displayed on screen.

Your practitioner will walk you through what they are observing in real time, explaining the significance of the various cell types and patterns. You may also provide a second drop for the coagulated blood assessment if this add-on has been included. The full session typically lasts 60–75 minutes, including consultation time.

Following the assessment, your practitioner will discuss supportive recommendations based on the findings and your broader health picture.

Who May Benefit?

Live blood morphology is suitable for most adults interested in gaining greater insight into their blood health and vitality. It is particularly sought by those who:

  • Are experiencing fatigue, low energy or reduced vitality without a clear cause
  • Want to monitor the progress of a nutritional or wellness programme
  • Have an interest in preventive and integrative health assessment
  • Are looking to complement their existing medical care with a holistic perspective

Please advise our team of any blood-borne conditions, bleeding disorders or medications prior to your appointment.
