What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine is one of the world's oldest healing traditions, used by virtually every culture across human history. It uses plant-based medicines — roots, leaves, flowers, bark and seeds — to support the body's own capacity for balance and wellbeing. At Integrated Natural Medicine, our practitioners are trained in both Chinese and Western herbal traditions, allowing us to draw on thousands of years of accumulated knowledge alongside modern evidence-informed practice.

Unlike standardised pharmaceutical drugs, herbal prescriptions at our clinic are individualised — formulated specifically for each person based on their unique constitution, health history and current presentation. No two prescriptions are the same.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is a core pillar of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), developed and refined over more than 2,000 years of clinical use. CHM formulas typically combine multiple herbs — often six to fifteen or more — in precise ratios, where each herb plays a specific role: a chief herb addresses the primary concern, supported by herbs that enhance its action, moderate any harsh effects, and direct the formula to the appropriate organ systems.

Prescribing is guided by the TCM diagnostic framework, which considers the whole person — including tongue and pulse diagnosis — rather than simply the presenting symptom. Formulas are regularly reviewed and adjusted as your health changes over the course of treatment.

Western Herbal Medicine

Western herbal medicine draws on the long tradition of European and indigenous botanical medicine, increasingly informed by modern phytochemical and clinical research. Our western herbal prescriptions typically use simpler combinations or individual herbs, with a focus on therapeutic evidence alongside traditional use.

Western herbal medicines are dispensed in a variety of forms including liquid extracts (tinctures), tablets, capsules and teas. Your practitioner will recommend the most appropriate form for your needs and lifestyle.

Homeopathic Medicine

Our clinic also prescribes homeopathic remedies where appropriate, sourcing premium German and Australian homeopathic preparations. Homeopathy uses highly diluted preparations derived from natural substances and is prescribed according to the principle of individualisation — matching the remedy to the whole person rather than the diagnosis alone.

Homeopathic medicine is prescribed at the practitioner's discretion as part of a broader naturopathic or integrative treatment plan.

Conditions Herbal Medicine May Support

Herbal medicine is a complementary therapy and is not intended to replace medical advice or treatment. Please consult your GP for diagnosis and medical management.

How Prescriptions Work

Herbal medicine is prescribed as part of a naturopathic or Chinese medicine consultation at our clinic — there is no need for a separate appointment. During your consultation, your practitioner will take a thorough health history, assess your individual needs and formulate a personalised herbal prescription where appropriate.

Prescriptions are most commonly dispensed as liquid extracts (combined into a single bottle) or tablets. Your practitioner will explain how to take your prescription and what to expect. Formulas are regularly reviewed at follow-up consultations and adjusted as your health progresses.

Quality and Safety

All herbal medicines prescribed at Integrated Natural Medicine are sourced from reputable, therapeutic-grade suppliers. Our practitioners hold recognised qualifications in herbal medicine and are experienced in safe and appropriate prescribing.

Before prescribing, your practitioner will take a full medication and supplement history to assess for any potential herb-drug interactions or contraindications. It is important that you disclose all prescribed medications, over-the-counter drugs and supplements at your consultation.
