If you've heard the term "bio-resonance" or "Vega testing" and wondered what it actually means — or what happens during a session — this post is for you. At Integrated Natural Medicine in Noosa, bio-resonance and VEGA assessment have been a core part of our clinical approach for many years. Here we explain the background, the process, and what role it plays in our integrative approach to health.
The Short Version
Bio-resonance and Vega testing are non-invasive, complementary assessment methods that use a specialised electronic device to observe how the body's energetic field responds to various test substances. The results provide information that helps guide a naturopathic consultation — they do not diagnose medical conditions and are always used alongside a thorough case history and, where appropriate, conventional medical testing.
A Bit of History
The roots of Vega testing go back to the work of Dr Reinhold Voll, a German physician who in the 1950s and 1960s investigated whether acupuncture points carried measurable electrical properties. His research, known as Electroacupuncture according to Voll (EAV), found that specific points on the skin carried electrical charges that appeared to correspond to organ systems in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Building on this, German physician Dr Helmut Schimmel developed the Vega test method in the 1970s, creating a more streamlined system that introduced test substances into the electromagnetic circuit to observe the body's response. The VEGA testing devices used in clinics today are the refined descendants of this German engineering tradition.
It's worth being upfront: Vega testing operates within a bioenergetic framework that is distinct from conventional Western medicine. It is not validated as a standalone diagnostic tool by mainstream medical bodies in Australia, and at INM we are clear about that. What it offers is a different lens — one that some patients find meaningfully informative as part of a holistic consultation.
How the VEGA Device Works
The VEGA device measures subtle changes in the body's electrical conductance at specific acupuncture points, usually on the hands or fingers.
During a session, you hold a brass cylinder in one hand — this completes a low-voltage circuit. The practitioner then uses a small stylus probe to touch specific acupuncture points on the other hand. Individual test substances (such as foods, environmental compounds, or nutritional factors) are introduced into the circuit via a test honeycomb connected to the device. A galvanometer inside the device observes any shift in the body's electrical response to each substance.
The process is entirely painless, requires no needles, and takes no blood. Most patients find it comfortable and often describe it as a genuinely interesting experience.
What Can a VEGA Session Assess?
The VEGA system can screen the body's energetic responses to a broad range of substances and potential stressors. In a single session, this may include:
- Foods and food groups (gluten, dairy, grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, etc.)
- Food additives and preservatives
- Heavy metals (such as mercury or lead)
- Environmental substances and compounds
- Phenolic compounds
- Dental materials and metals
- Nutritional factors
- Organ and system stress indicators
Food responses — including potential food intolerances and food sensitivities — are among the most common areas patients ask us to investigate, particularly when they suspect that what they're eating may be contributing to how they feel. Many patients on the Sunshine Coast also ask us to assess responses to environmental and seasonal factors.
Your practitioner will discuss which testing panels are most relevant to your individual health picture before the session begins. The selection is guided by your case history and presenting concerns — it is not a one-size-fits-all process.
Important: The VEGA device is not registered as a medical diagnostic instrument in Australia and its results should not be interpreted as a medical diagnosis. Findings from a VEGA session are one piece of a broader clinical picture, always considered alongside your full health history and any relevant conventional testing your GP or specialist has ordered.
Bio-Resonance Testing vs. Bio-Resonance Therapy
These two terms are related but describe different things, and it's worth distinguishing them.
Bio-resonance testing (or VEGA testing) is the assessment phase — observing how the body responds energetically to various substances and stressors.
Bio-resonance therapy is a separate therapeutic application — using specific electromagnetic frequencies to work with the energetic patterns identified during testing, with the goal of supporting the body's own regulatory processes. At INM, this is sometimes referred to as Audiocolor therapy and may incorporate colour and tonal frequencies in addition to bioresonance.
What Happens During a Session at INM?
Our bio-resonance and VEGA assessments are embedded within a broader naturopathic consultation, not delivered in isolation. A typical initial session with either Dr René Fontyne or Karen follows this structure:
1. Health History Review
Your practitioner begins with a thorough review of your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, diet, and any previous testing or treatment. This guides which VEGA test panels are most relevant to you.
2. VEGA Testing
You hold a brass cylinder in one hand while the stylus probe is gently applied to specific acupuncture points on the other. Test substances are introduced one at a time, and the galvanometer response is observed and recorded.
3. Results Discussion
Findings are discussed with you at the close of the session. Your practitioner will explain what was observed in plain language and within the context of your overall health picture.
4. Personalised Support Plan
Based on the session findings and your full consultation, a tailored naturopathic support plan may be recommended. This might include dietary adjustments, herbal or nutritional supplementation, further investigation with your GP, or a follow-up appointment.
Who Might Benefit From VEGA Assessment?
VEGA testing tends to suit people who:
- Are seeking a comprehensive, whole-person view of their health
- Want a complementary perspective alongside conventional medical care
- Are interested in identifying potential dietary or environmental factors that may be contributing to how they feel
- Value a non-invasive, thorough assessment process
- Have had conventional testing that hasn't provided clear answers to their health concerns
It is important to understand that VEGA assessment is a complementary tool, not a replacement for conventional medical investigation. If you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate a serious medical condition, please see your GP promptly.
A Note on Our Approach at INM
At Integrated Natural Medicine, VEGA testing is always used as one component of a comprehensive integrative health assessment — never in isolation. Our practitioners bring decades of combined clinical experience and take the time to understand your full health picture before forming any recommendations.
We are transparent about what this technology is and what it is not. We do not claim it diagnoses disease. What we offer is a thorough, thoughtful consultation that draws on multiple assessment methods — VEGA, iridology, detailed case history, and where indicated, referral for conventional pathology — to build the most complete picture of your health that we can.
If you'd like to learn more or book a consultation, we'd love to hear from you.
